Corticosteroids

Cortisone related medicines are termed corticosteroids; these are not testosterone or androgenous steroids.

Corticosteroids are commonly used to reduce inflammation. Our goal is to specifically apply a potent concentration of this medication at the suspected sore spot in your spine.

Corticosteroid use can be associated with some common side effects that are temporary:

  • Swelling from sodium and fluid retention
  • Muscle aches and headaches
  • Flushing (turning red) and feeling hot. Temperature is tylically normal.
  • Sweating
  • Insomnia (difficulty sleeping)
  • Irritability
  • Menstrual irregularity
  • Weight gain

Complications of corticosteroids from single shot injections are rare but could affect people with heart failure, diabetes, ulcers, and clots. Other rare complications could cause osteoporosis, cataracts, weaknessm adrenal insufficiency, aseptic necrosis of the hips. Such complications are more common with high dose and longer term use.
