Spinal interventional procedures should adhere to the standards of care for fluoroscopy, surgery center, and physician specialization.

Fluoroscopy

The spinal canal is far more complex than most doctors and patients conceive. There are both barriers and dangers to be respected. Only by performing spinal injections under fluoroscopy (live x-ray) can the doctor assure that he is performing the procedure accurately, safely, and with the greatest hope of a desirable outcome. Advanced Pain Medicine Physicians perform spinal injections under fluoroscopy.

West Tacoma Surgery Center (WTSC)

Also located at 1628 S Mildred St in Tacoma is West Tacoma Surgery Center, an ambulatory surgery center, or ASC. WTSC is an operating room environment where surgeries are performed away from the hospital campus. WTSC is required to meet or exceed federal and state guidelines and must pass inspection sanctioned by Washington State and Medicare. These regulatory requirements exist to ensure patient safety and quality of care. WTSC provides:

  • a sterile operating room
  • preoperative and postoperative recovery areas
  • properly qualified staff, credentialing of the physician staff
  • quality assurance reviews, safety protocols, regulated pharmacy
  • patient monitoring and resuscitative equipment
  • sedation or anesthesia when appropriate
  • highly rated specialty care.

Interventional Pain Physicians

The physician who performs your procedure should dedicate his practice to performing pain related spinal injections. There are now board certifications in Pain Medicine that provide for a standard of knowledge base. Either the American Board of Pain Medicine, or the anesthesiology subspecialty board exam should have been passed. Additional training and continuing education must be pursued to learn new techniques. Of course, experience develops skills. Dr. Jasper is one of the most experienced interventional pain physicians in the Northwest.
